Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m Lukas, the Marketing Lead at Klayr. I was born in the US, but I have lived here in the Netherlands for the last 6 years with my amazing wife. We have a bird and a puppy, and that helps keep life very interesting. I love to travel and discover new cultures, especially through the food. Because of that, the largest part of my career has been in the travel industry. I’m passionate about marketing and I’m really looking forward to doing big things now that I’ve started at Klayr.
What are your passions and hobbies? Maybe some fun facts?
One of my biggest passions came up during the pandemic when all of the bars and restaurants were closed. I did a deep dive into learning how to be a better home cook. It was always something I enjoyed doing but hadn’t explored in a lot of detail. Since there was a lot of free time, I consumed an incredible amount of content and learned more than I ever imagined I would about cooking. My favourite food is definitely steak, and it’s probably the dish that I’ve spent the most time perfecting.
As I mentioned before, travel has always been a big part of my life. One of my fun facts is that I hit my goal of travelling to 30 countries before I turned 30, and now I’ve got my sights set on 40 before 40. My favourite countries to visit are Spain, Germany, and Latvia.
Alongside travel and food, I have also had different hobbies over the years including martial arts, salsa dancing, learning languages, and even making videos for YouTube. I think that part of doing a good job in marketing comes from having creativity and discipline in other areas of life, and my hobbies help give me the inspiration to do cool things at work.
What brought you to Web3?
Funnily enough, the pandemic was also when I got involved in Web3. Like most of the world, my Netflix consumption also spiked, and it was then that I came across the documentary Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet. It was the first time that I felt like I could kind of understand blockchain and some of the many ways that it can benefit the internet and the world. I didn’t get involved on the professional side until I started this role at Klayr Labs, but now a couple of months in, I am really enjoying it!
What excites you the most about working at Klayr Labs?
The most exciting thing is the chance to build the marketing strategy from the ground up and figure out the best way to reach our target audience. There are so many opportunities that can be made possible with our platform that making sure they’re communicated in the right way to the right people creates the perfect challenge to get me up and running in the morning!
On top of that, the energy and creativity of my team is a huge motivation to bring my A-game every single day.
To you, what is the biggest difference between Web2 and Web3? What about working for a start-up?
The biggest difference between Web2 and Web3 is the communication style. Things are a lot more informal on channels like Discord. I really like it because it feels very authentic and you can have a lot of fun communicating your message.
When it comes to working for a start-up, I really enjoy the freedom that I have to own the marketing strategy and bring things to life based on my experience and the best data available to me. There’s no hierarchy preventing us from trying things out and seizing every opportunity to learn more about our audience and adapt based on those learnings immediately.
For marketers interested in joining blockchain companies, what would you recommend?
Come in with an open mind. A lot of “traditional” marketing tactics still apply in the world of Web3, but there are some that simply don’t. Things develop quickly and the learning curve can be steep, but if you stay open to learning and embrace the challenge of understanding a sometimes complex subject, you’ll go far.
What is the message you want to send to other Klayniacs?
We’re in a very exciting time at the start of the Klayr blockchain, but the most exciting times are yet to come. We have the opportunity to create tremendous value and utility within our ecosystem, so let’s build something incredible together. It’s gonna be fire! 🔥
